온타리오에서 호수를 끼고 있는 도시들은 왠만하면 다 크루즈를 운행하는 것 같습니다. 미드랜드도 조지안 베이 입구에 자리를 잡고 있으니 빠질 수 없지요. (실은 10분 떨어진 페네탱귀쉰에서 출발하는 크루즈가 따로 있었는데 얼마 전에 없어졌다고 합니다. 가을 풍경이 정말 아름답다고 들어서 꼭 타보고 싶었는데 아쉬워요..)
미드랜드 크루즈는 킹 스트릿을 따라 쭉 내려오면 있는 부두에서 출발합니다.

2시에 출발하는데 표를 사 둔 후에 그 옆에 있는 식당(Boathouse Restaurant)에서 간단히 점심을 먹고 오니 시간이 딱 맞습니다. 승선 티켓은 35불. 두 시가 반 크루즈 치고는 비싸지 않은 느낌입니다. 평일인데도 사람들이 꽤 많아서 2층 데크가 꽉 찼습니다. 한 40명은 족히 되어 보이네요. 나중에 알고보니 미국 아이오와 주에서 가스펠 음악 공연을 하는 사람들이 공연할 미드랜드에 와서 한 열명이 단체로 탑승했습니다. 그래서 좀 더 많아 보였나 봅니다.
조지안 베이에는 3만 개의 섬이 흩어져 있고 왠만한 섬에는 다 카티지가 있고 나름의 역사와 전설이 있습니다. 크루즈를 타고 가는 동안 방송으로 보이는 광경을 설명해 줍니다.

1. MIDLAND TOWN DOCK
Once the site of a thriving shipbuilding business which lasted through two great wars, Midland Town Dock has changed over the years to a tourist showplace. Gone are the railway tracks and covered dock of yesteryear and in their place an attractive deep water harbour catering to pleasure craft and the tourists who come to enjoy the splendour of Georgian Bay.
2. ADM MILLING CO.
ADM Milling Co. operates a flour mill and grain elevator on the shores of Midland Harbour. The elevator receives wheat from western Canada by barge and conventional bulk freighters. One or two lake 打eighters lay up at the elevator each winter. The mill produces flour for shipment in bulk trailers to major bakeries throughout Ontario. The Five Roses brand of all purpose flour for household use is produced and packaged at Midland in bags ranging from 1.0 kg. to 10 kg.
3. TOWN OF MIDLAND PROPERTY
The former Unimen Canada Limited land was sold to the Town of Midland for development purposes.
4. MIDLAND BAY SAILING CLUB
This club was organized to promote racing among specific sail boat classes and handicap racing between sailboats of different classes. The basics of sailing and racing are taught to junior sailors.
5. BAY PORT MARINA
This was once called Sunnyside Marina and was built at the turn of the century, 1901. The original marina buildings are still in use as a boat showroom. The marina provides slips for550 pleasure boats.
6. THE MIDLAND POINT LIGHT
Is in fact two lights which form a range when viewed from the water. Because the tower and upper lights are constructed on the same compass bearing they only appear “lined-up” when viewed from a vessel on the same bearing. This particular range is used to guide vessels in and out of Victoria Harbour.
7. SNAKE ISLAND
It is reportedly named after a local Indian Chief. Contrary to popular belief this land is not inundated with snakes but as snakes are excellent swimmers the island will be visited by them.
8. PRESENT ISLAND
Is named for the British custom of giving presents to the Ojibwa to cement treaties. Stored at the Naval and Military Establishments to the west, gifts were distributed by the Indian Affairs Department.
9. ENTRANCE TO PENETANG
After the War of 1812, the British built a naval and military base on the protected shores of Penetanguishene bay.
Now named Discovery Harbour, this provincial attraction features costumed staff who offer guided tours of the historic site. Discovery Harbour features two replica historic ships H.M.S. Bee and H.M.S. Tecumseth, a working dockyard, numerous reconstructed buildings, and the original 19th century Officers’ Quarters. Penetanguishene, a French-English community to the West dates from about 1828. Georgian Bay’s first steamer, the “Penetanguishene” was built here in 1932.
10. PINERY POINT
This peninsula, “Place of the white rolling sands”, site of numerous Huron villages, later gave its name to the town of Penetanguishene.
